It is very important when visiting a financial website NOT to go through a link and to use a virtual keyboard when entering passwords.

1.     Always key in the actual web address of your bank, e.g.

www.mybank.co.uk into the address bar, not your search engine or a link from any other source or email.

2.     A virtual keyboard is an on-screen keyboard which you use by clicking on the letters with your mouse. Key loggers pick up keystrokes to reveal your hidden password and using a virtual keyboard prevents this.

Many security programs will have a virtual keyboard included in the package but if yours doesn’t have such luxuries (e.g. AVG doesn’t), then MS Windows can help.

For Windows XP:

From the Start button, go to Programs, across & up to Accessories, across to Accessibility, down to On-Screen Keyboard and then click to bring up your virtual keyboard.   Then use your mouse to click on the keys.

For Windows 7 or Vista:

From the Start button:
Click on "All Programs" to open the list.
Click on "Accessories",
Click on "Ease of Access"
Click on "On-Screen Keyboard"
This brings up the virtual keyboard. Use your mouse to click on the keys

One small warning: if you are in a public place, be aware of potential “Shoulder Surfers” (people who stand behind you watching your screen).
