It is very important when visiting a financial website NOT to go through a link and to use a virtual keyboard when entering passwords.

1.     Always key in the actual web address of your bank, e.g.

www.mybank.co.uk into the address bar, not your search engine or a link from any other source or email.

2.     A virtual keyboard is an on-screen keyboard which you use by clicking on the letters with your mouse. Key loggers pick up keystrokes to reveal your hidden password and using a virtual keyboard prevents this.

Many security programs will have a virtual keyboard included in the package but if yours doesn’t have such luxuries (e.g. AVG doesn’t), then MS Windows can help.

For Windows XP:

From the Start button, go to Programs, across & up to Accessories, across to Accessibility, down to On-Screen Keyboard and then click to bring up your virtual keyboard.   Then use your mouse to click on the keys.

For Windows 7 or Vista:

From the Start button, go to Programs, across & up to Accessories, across to Ease of Access, down to On-Screen Keyboard and then click to bring up your virtual keyboard.   Then use your mouse to click in the panel you wish to type the password and then to click on the virtual keyboard keys. One small warning: if you are in a public place, be aware of potential “Shoulder Surfers” (people who stand behind you watching your screen).
